Spyros & Maria - A Big Fat Greek Wedding made in Greece.
Spyros and Maria, who have been living in America for many years, decided to return to Greece – their beloved homeland – for their wedding celebration. From the very beginning, they imagined their wedding pretty much like that of the Portokalos family in the hit movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” This was exactly how they pictured their special day, surrounded by family, filled with smiles and loving faces, warm embraces, and the unrelenting spirit of Greek festivity.
The preparations began a year earlier, exchanging countless video calls with their charismatic wedding planner, Olympia Tampaki. She recalls one unforgettable moment, when she showed Maria a quaint little chapel. “It’s dedicated to Panagia, the Virgin Mary,” Olympia explained. Without hesitation, Maria exclaimed “Olympia, let’s not look any further, this is it, this is where I want to get married.”
The wedding was bursting with traditional Greek elements and the rich cultural heritage of Greece. Every detail reflected the beauty and traditions of the land, floral arrangements infused with the vibrant colors of summer, sprigs of olive and fresh fruits and wedding favors filled with sea salt and lavender which symbolized the ancient “Earth and Water” of Herodotus.
The themed menu highlighted Greek gastronomy with artisanal cheeses, seasonal fruits, fine wines from local producers, and pastries from every corner of the country. Even the rice was presented in decorated sieves decorated with olive branches -a rustic detail that charmed and touched every guest.
As night fell, the celebration reached its peak. The orchestra’s music and the sound of the bouzouki filled the air, while guests joined in an endless dance of joy that carried on until dawn. For Spyros and Maria, it was truly a dream come true, not just a wedding reminiscent of a beloved movie, but an event that embodied life, love, and the timeless spirit of Greece.
