Katie & Alex- A Joyful Wedding in Crete Rooted in Tradition
Katie and Alex, a London-based couple with a deep love for Greece, knew from the very beginning that Crete was the only place where their wedding truly belonged. Drawn not to postcard views but to the island’s spirit, they decided to marry in the heart of the Cretan countryside. A scenery comprised of olive trees, stone pathways and most important, the generous, warm hospitality of the Cretan people.
Their wedding journey began two days earlier with a relaxed daytime cruise organised by wedding planner Eleni Mavrogeni of Weddings in Crete. Enjoying swims in crystal-clear waters, Greek music, delicious local food, beers and ouzo created a joyful, easygoing atmosphere from the very start. “It was the perfect and authentic way to welcome everyone in Crete,” Eleni adds.
On the day of the wedding, the ceremony was held early in the day, allowing more time for the reception, which unfolded slowly with the couple and their guests savoring every moment until late at night. October proved once again to be one of Crete’s most beautiful months, with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze accompanying the day. Guests were treated to a delectable feast of organic, local dishes in the Cretan culinary tradition.
The wedding favors reflected the couple’s appreciation for Crete’s natural treasures: small bottles of organic Cretan olive oil and jars of local honey, as a thank-you gift to their loved ones.
As daylight faded, the wedding reception turned into a vivacious Cretan feast. The melodies of the bouzouki and the Cretan lyre filled the courtyard, as the couple and guests danced freely under the olive trees. What started as a wedding, evolved into a heartfelt, high-spirited celebration of life that drifted well past midnight. A destination wedding that became a genuine Cretan experience.
